Exploring the Soul of the Movement: A GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi Educational Experience

GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi, in partnership with Nissan, is proud to offer “Exploring the Soul of the Movement” — a powerful and engaging program designed specifically for K–6 classrooms. This three-part educational journey combines history, music, and interactive learning to help students connect with the past in meaningful ways — all at no cost to your school.

Program Overview

“Exploring the Soul of the Movement” brings civil rights history to life by showcasing the role of music in inspiring change, promoting justice, and uniting communities. This immersive experience is built around three key components:

1. In-Classroom Kickoff

A GRAMMY Museum Mississippi educator will visit your school to lead a dynamic, age-appropriate lesson introducing students to key moments in civil rights history and the music that powered the movement. Through discussion, listening activities, and multimedia content, students will begin to explore how songs became anthems for justice, courage, and unity.

2. Field Trip: A Day at the Museum

Next, your class will be invited to the GRAMMY Museum in Cleveland, Mississippi, for an unforgettable hands-on learning experience. Students will explore museum exhibits and participate in guided activities that deepen their understanding of the historical impact of music during the civil rights movement.

Travel support available! The Museum will cover up to $500 in travel expenses, making this field trip more accessible for schools throughout the Delta and beyond.

3. Classroom Kit

After the visit, you’ll receive a ready-to-use classroom kit filled with engaging lesson plans, interactive games, and materials to extend learning. Whether reviewing key concepts or diving deeper into discussion, this toolkit empowers teachers to continue exploring the intersection of music and history long after the program ends.
